Lord John McFall

One of the privileges of being a Scotland-based photographer working on assignment, and on personal projects, is getting to meet the people we do. I had one such portrait assignment recently in Dumbarton, near Glasgow, with Lord Speaker, Lord John McFall of Alcluith.

Not only do we get to meet people of all walks of life, with all experiences behind them, but we get to chat, to listen and learn, and while doing so photograph a tangible record of the meeting. It’s perhaps something we take for granted at times, but on occasion I come away from portrait shoots particularly glad to have met the person I did, perhaps someone I didn’t know too much about beforehand.

This year I’ve been working on a portrait photography project with artists and painters across Scotland and through that met many whose work wasn’t familiar to me, but to meet them, to chat, to discover their own art practice, has been particularly inspiring. And all because I have a little camera which gains me access. It’s such a privilege this job.
